Eye-Fi Adds Software Development Program

The makers of theEye-Fi Wi-Fi cardfor digital cameras and other portable devices announced a new developer program on Tuesday that will allow application developers to add support for the cards.

Potential developers can visitthe company's developer siteto sign up.

Eye-Fi's cards fit into the SD form factor used by many digital cameras, and add Wi-Fi capability; for example, the Eye-Fi Pro X2 packs 8 GB of flash memory, 802.11n, and an antenna into an SD card that usually contains nothing but flash memory for storing image and possibly video data.

The addition of a developer program typically means that more and more software applications will be able to take advantage of thew capabilities the Eye-Fi cards offer. Eye-Fi promises that developers will now be able to allow users to view photos and videos sent to an Eye-Fi account from any website or application; bridge the gap between photo software and the 45 photo sharing sites Eye-Fi supports; and facilitate the customization of the Eye-Fi card settings panel.

"In response to a strong marketplace and community demand, we're introducing the Eye-Fi Developer Program, which enables developers to expand and extend the Eye-Fi experience," said Jef Holove, president and chief ewxecutive of Eye-Fi, in a statement. "Looking back five years, Eye-Fi's founders recognized the need for a solution that has already helped people back up, organize or share more than 100 million memories.
